Product Full Description

Quick Overview The available textbooks in surgical gastroenterology are not comprehensive, do not adequately discuss some of the diseases which are specifically relevant in the Asian context and do not have Indian protocols for therapy and follow-up even for diseases which are commonly seen by us. I, therefore, worked to compile a book, which could serve as a textbook for the students of surgical gastroenterology and could also be of help to the practicing surgeons and the gastroenterologists. Key Features • A highly illustrated two volume resource for residents and practising surgeons. • Divided into 124 chapters across ten sections. • Covers a vast range of gastroenterological conditions and their surgical management from basics to advance. • Begins with a general section, covering imaging, infections and antibiotics, radiation therapy, nutritional support for hospitalised patients, statistics, and interventional radiology. • Subsequent sections cover specific parts of the gastrointestinal system, including oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, liver, spleen, and colon. • Each section begins with a chapter on anatomy, before covering the surgical treatment of various disorders. • The penultimate section provides extensive information on liver transplantation, and the final section covers miscellaneous topics in gastroenterology. • Enhanced by 1200 images, and includes two DVDs with guidance on seven surgical procedures. • A must-have in the armamentarium of all students and practitioners of surgery and gastroenterology. Target Audience Professional and reference. DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION Includes 2 DVDs, Peter Nau, MD, MS(University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics) Description er than replicate a book that describes the operative steps of a variety of pathologies or specialties, the authors have chosen to address the comprehensive medical and surgical management of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. It is unique in its emphasis on mastering the medical management of these pathologies rather than mentoring a surgeon who is strictly a technician. Purpose uture -- one who is comfortable with the nuances of the pathophysiology and nonoperative management of a disease rather than one who is only comfortable with the technical aspects of a procedure. This is, perhaps unfortunately, a rather novel concept in its in-depth approach to the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. The book is very successful in its execution of this goal with thoughtful chapters that address all aspects of care from the work-up to the management of perioperative complications. Audience The intended audience is broad. It would be of benefit for general surgery residents as well as private practice surgeons. It is not meant to be a surgical primer, but rather a more in-depth look at the variety of diseases GI surgeons may treat. The authors display a comprehensive understanding of the subject with very little overlap between chapters or gaps in information. Features The book is divided into chapters based on disease states, i.e., dysphagia, GERD, motility of the esophagus. This allows readers to search based on pathology. It is unique in its emphasis on the pathophysiology and diagnostic work-up of a disease state. This is both the book’s strength and its weakness. This is not a resource for surgeons who are seeking information on how to maximize their efficiency and operative technique. Rather, it is a book that will help readers become more comfortable with the care of the patient prior to an operation and manage potential postoperative complications. Assessment This is an excellent book. The days of a GI surgeon being a technician rather than a physician are numbered. This book is a representation of this fact, emphasizing not just the operative steps, but also addressing the disease state from diagnosis to operation.
